Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is required when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.
If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth. This may eventually lead to an abscess.
If root canal treatment is not undertaken the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out. Once the pulp is destroyed, the tooth cannot heal and it cannot be left in the mouth.
Although some people would prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible. Root canal treatment is a routine and painless dental procedure. A local anaesthetic is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling.

Dr. Rupinder Reel (GDC No: 73329) is our specialist endodontist and has 26 years extensive dentistry experience and has perfomed hundreds of root canal treatments for patients across Berkshire.
Our root canal team also includes highly experienced dentist Dr. Pavan Gogna (GDC No: 82478) who has over 20 years extensive dentistry experience.
The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.
During the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time.
The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle, a crown is usually required at this point to prevent the tooth from fracturing.
The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.
In the past, a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance.
Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated. After treatment, it is better to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.
Root-treated teeth should be treated just the same as any other tooth. Remember to clean your teeth at least once a day, preferably with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on sugary snacks, and keep them only to mealtimes if possible.
See your dentist for regular check-ups to avoid costly and potentially painful future trips to the dentist.
Patients can be self referred or referred to us from their own dentist but only on a private basis.

Urgent root canal treatment
I recently needed an urgent root canal treatment, where I had a long-standing infection under a crown which my previous dental practice had not spotted. Pav at Crown Wood did a fabulous job of carrying out the root canal without damaging the original crown.
Very professional whilst managing to keep me relaxed throughout treatment, including step by step information on what he was doing which was very reassuring.
I've now switched dentists to the Crown Wood practice and would definitely recommend them to anyone!
Nervous root canal patient
Since childhood I've always been apprehensive about seeing the dentist. I was recommended to CrownWood Dental Practice by a friend, and can say without doubt its dentists, nurses and reception staff are impeccable. Last month I required a root canal treatment and was seen by Dr Gogna.
I was extremely impressed by the high level of care and the level of detail in explaining the treatment, prior to commencement - it made the trip from Slough all the more worthwhile.
I can't recommend or praise CrownWood Dental Practice more. Thank you!
