National Smile Month

Today marks the start of National Smile Month which runs from 12th May to 12th June. Because a smile costs nothing but gives so much, let’s celebrate all the kinds of smiles we encounter in our lives and let’s try and replicate them through the month: 😊 😀 😋 😇 😍😁 If you enjoy the infectious effects your smile can have on everyone around you, why not carry on smiling every day of every month 😄?

National Smile Month 2025 focuses on a topic that is dear to our heart: the powerful connection between diet and oral health. You can find out more about it here:

https://www.dentalhealth.org/nationalsmilemonth2025.

It is worth thinking about how a balanced diet contributes to strong bright teeth by enhancing enamel, protecting gums and preventing tooth decay. Having a consistent and effective routine is equally important and National Smile Month is a great opportunity to remind yourself of the basics of a good daily oral health routine:

🪥 Brushing your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste

🪥 Cleaning between your teeth with interdental brushes or floss

🪥 Cutting down on sugary foods and drinks

🪥 Visiting your dentist regularly

This month is therefore the perfect time to take action and arrange a dental check up or a hygiene appointment just to make sure you are looking after your teeth and “feeding your smile” properly.

Mouth Cancer

Throughout the month of November, the Mouth Cancer Foundation and the Oral Health Foundation work hard to raise awareness of oral cancer with their 👄 Mouth Cancer Action Month?

To find out more about how to get involved here: https://www.mouthcancerfoundation.org/mouth-cancer-action-month/

It is important to be mouth aware by looking for red or white patches, long-lasting mouth ulcers or unusual lumps and swellings in the mouth, lips, head and neck. If you notice anything unusual, it is important that you flag this with your dentist.

Having regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments also allows your dentist to detect any early signs of cancer so it’s important to book and attend these routine dental appointments.

Did you know that November is ? Mouth Cancer Action Month?

Throughout the month of November, the Mouth Cancer Foundation and the Oral Health Foundation work hard to raise awareness of oral cancer and you can find out more about how to get involved here: https://www.mouthcancerfoundation.org/mouth-cancer-action-month/

Over 8300 new cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year. Mouth cancer affects 650 000 people worldwide per year and over 2700 lives are lost every year. Incidence has risen by 49% over the past 10 years whilst 5-year survival rates have hardly improved in the last few decades due to late detection.

This is why not just in November but every single day, it is important to be mouth aware by looking for red or white patches, long-lasting mouth ulcers or unusual lumps and swellings in the mouth, lips, head and neck. If you notice anything unusual, it is important that you flag this with your dentist.

Having regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments also allows your dentist to detect any early signs of cancer so it’s important to book and attend these routine dental appointments.
