Facial Massage

Anti-ageing facial massage you can do at home during the latest lockdown.

This is one of those fundamental steps a lot of people tend to leave out. Prior to your daily cleaning and moisturising routine, a facial massage is beneficial to our face because it helps with blood circulation, reduces wrinkles and lines and is a good way to slim down and detoxify lymph drainage of our face.  For those who wake up with a ‘puffy’ face, facial massage can help to reduce it.

It is simple to do a facial massage at home; it does not take long.  Simply remove your make up, cleanse your face with a facial cleanser, apply a layer of hydrating tonic on your face (and neck) and follow by using a good hydrating serum which is suitable for your skin condition. Then, use a couple of drops of facial oil and start the massage.

After 1-2 minutes of massaging your face and neck, you can finally apply the night moisturiser. After doing this regime for 3-4 weeks, you will be able to see a significant skin lift and glow in your face.

Lines and wrinkles (and how laser therapy can help)

What causes lines and wrinkles?

Lines and wrinkles are something that everyone gets no matter how much we’d all like to pretend we won’t.

Whilst they are caused naturally by age and other factors like smoking, ultraviolet radiation is the primary cause of early wrinkling as it speeds the natural ageing process. Exposure to UV light breaks down your skin’s connective tissue – collagen and elastin fibers – which lie in the deeper layer of the skin (dermis).

What can you do to keep youthful skin?

Although it’s inevitable that wrinkles will show up at some point, taking good care of your skin can go a long way in keeping it wrinkle-free for as long as possible.

At CrownWood MediSpa, we provide ClearLift laser skin rejuvenation treatments using the revolutionary Harmony XL Pro which actively targets and treats lines, wrinkles and sun damage for fresher, tighter skin without surgery or injections.

How does ClearLift work?

ClearLift is a form of light therapy that stimulates the skin’s production of collagen and is a gentle way to resurface the skin on the face and neck. The treatment uses a specially designed fractional Q-switched 1064 laser to achieve a deep mechanical effect focusing the energy beneath the epidermis, creating a controlled dermal wound while leaving the epidermis intact. The wound healing process stimulates growth of new collagen as well as contracture and tightening of the tissue. It can be used anywhere on the face – including to decrease eye puffiness and dark circles – as well as to firm and treat the neck.

ClearLift treatments are not painful at all in fact many patients like the feel of the laser working in a positive way, deep within the skin. Known as a ‘lunchtime’ procedure because it takes only 20 minutes, it is safe for all skin types and doesn’t involve any downtime.

What is ClearLift for?

  • Sun damage
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Loose skin
  • Lost firmness and smoothness
  • Saggy jowls, jawline and neck skin
  • Eyebags
  • Droopy brow/forehead
  • Nose to mouth lines

Understanding Moisturisers

Not all moisturisers are the same and they have very different effects on the skin barrier depending on the formulation.

Also, did you know that the outer layer of your skin (the epidermis) is completely renewed every 28 days!   Which is probably a good thing considering it is constantly under threat from the environment.

In a recent article published in the highly regarded Aesthetics journal, Dr Benjamin Lee, our clinical Dermatologist, explains why and how our skin benefits from the application of moisturisers along with giving some important pointers on what to look for when choosing which product will be best for you and your skin.

As a bit of a teaser – did you know that there’s a right and wrong way to apply your moisturiser?  In the article, Dr Lee provides some great advice on how you should go about it.

Harmony SHR hair removal

Women spend an average of 72 days shaving over an entire lifetime!

According to a recent study, women spend an average of 72 days shaving over an entire lifetime! 1,700+ hours are wasted just getting rid of unwanted hair that can be eliminated forever in just a handful of 30-minute sessions. Shaving, waxing, and plucking are rated as the ‘most loathed’ beauty task lists, so it makes sense that laser hair removal is the 2nd most common cosmetic procedure.

Super Hair Removal (SHR) is an innovative laser treatment available with the Harmony XL Pro System, which utilizes concentrated light beams to destroy the hair follicles. That means truly removing it from the root. Each pulse of light is an incredibly narrow, specific wavelength of energy that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle. The process gradually heats the melanin and hair follicles with effective heat buildup to destroy the hair for long-lasting results.

For more information on how Harmony Super Hair Removal works watch this video

The SHR hair removal treatment is safe for sensitive skin areas and can be used on the face, so you can eliminate unwanted hair on your upper lip, nostrils, and between eyebrows forever. Schedule SHR Hair Removal for your legs, arms, bikini area, or back and you’ll never have to shave or wax again.

The ‘lunchtime procedure’ can be scheduled any time of year and it’s safe for all skin tones, including tanned skin. After just 6 to 8 sessions*, you will be hair-free forever. Enjoy smooth, soft skin and use your 1,700+ extra razor-free hours for something more meaningful and memorable!

The Benefits of Harmony SHR Hair Removal

  • safe, fast and effective
  • painless, no downtime and redness
  • permanent hair reduction
  • cover all parts of the body, male and female
  • suitable for all skin types, even tanned skin

Harmony iPixel Skin Resurfacing

Scarred skin is lingering proof of a trauma as the skin heals by replacing injured skin cells with fibrotic tissue. Compacted scar tissue rarely fades on its own and we generally assume that most scars are left for life. With the Harmony XL Pro iPixel Laser at Crownwood MediSpa, you can give your skin a fresh start and reclaim smooth, glowing skin in just 30 minutes.

The iPixel Laser is named for the innovative pixel laser configuration, which stamps a small pin-sized pixel grid onto the skin. This powerful laser is fractionally ablative, so it heats up the compacted scar tissue with powerful, targeted wave energy that destroys the damaged tissue in the process. This laser reaches through the top layers of the skin with precise, controlled penetration and intensity.

Unlike traditional ablative laser resurfacing, which burns the outer layer of skin, this new generation of treatment does minimal damage to the outer skin layer and thus minimizes redness and downtime. The ablative element of the lase happens at a deep-skin layer and uses heat to stimulate collagen production. This triggers the body’s natural healing process to stimulate the growth of new healthy skin tissue.

iPixel Skin Resurfacing is an effective treatment for:

  • Signs of ageing
  • Acne/facial scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dull uneven skin tone/pigmentation
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun damage
  • Rough skin texture
  • Can be used on the body to treat scarring or stretch marks

THE 10 FUN FACTS OF RETINOL

Fact #1: Retinol literally slows down the ageing process – and increases collagen production

Up to our mid-30s, our skin turns over and regenerates every 28 days. But after that, skin turnover slows down and our cells regenerate every 50-60-70 days, which leads to drier, duller, more wrinkled skin.

While most anti-ageing skincare products work on a topical level, retinol targets skin at a cellular level – sinking into your skin and speeding up cell turnover to help your body generate fresher, smoother, brand new skin. Pretty exciting!

Retinol also increases collagen production, which is responsible for smoothing, firming, plumping, and strengthening your skin. When you use retinol, you not only protect yourself from forming new wrinkles, you also treat the ones you already have.

Fact #2: Retinol doesn’t just help prevent wrinkles…

Yes, retinol smoothes your current fine lines but also prevents new ones from forming. Because it exfoliates on a cellular level, retinol also reveals brighter, smoother skin. Retinol also evens out your complexion – fading dark spots, sun spots, hyperpigmentation and acne scars. And, last but not least, retinol treats acne by regulating oily skin and keeping pores from clogging. In fact, the popular oral acne medication Accutane is an oral retinoid.

Fact #3: Retinol & Vitamin A the same thing

Also known as Retinol, Vitamin A can help increase the appearance of firmness, diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles, significantly improve uneven skin tone, smooth and finally refine the surface of skin as well. Retinol is definitely a powerful multi-tasker.” Linda Blahr, Head of National Training at SkinCeuticals.

Fact #4: You shouldn’t apply retinoids during the day

Retinol breaks down in sunlight, which is why most retinol products are held in opaque packaging.  Exposure to UV light renders the product less active, which makes the use of it less beneficial. “Retinol is prone to increase photosensitivity within the skin,” says Linda Blahr, Head of National Training at SkinCeuticals. “Always use a high, broad spectrum sunscreen when using this product.”

Fact #5: Retinoids are for all skin types

While retinol is suitable for everyone, different strengths are appropriate for different skin types. Retinol can be damaging if your skin is sensitive, enhancing inflammation and causing eczema, rosacea and peeling. Retinol can be quite drying, so it is recommended for those with dry & dehydrated skin to seal the product in with a moisturiser at the very least.

Fact #6: Retinoids don’t have to irritate your skin

Retinol causes redness, dryness and even flaking – however this can easily be avoided or minimised by gradually introducing the ingredient into your skincare regime and building a tolerance to it. When you start out, choose the gentlest formula and start slowly. Apply a pea-size drop of serum, or thin layer of moisturiser once a week for one week, two nights a week for two weeks, three nights a week for three weeks, and then every other night indefinitely.

Fact #7: Retinoids do not thin the skin

Retinol actually thickens the skin, increasing cell turnover and collagen production for thicker, more youthful skin.

Fact #8: You should start using retinol in your 20’s

While there is no set time to use retinol, most dermatologists advise introducing the product in your mid-twenties, particularly if you suffer from breakouts or pigmentation. It is suggested that one uses retinol for 3 months, then takes a three month break. This is due to research that suggests cell turnover is no longer increased after 3 months of retinol usage.

Fact #9: Retinol, Retin-A & Retinoid are not the same thing

Retin-A is a prescription level retinoid that is stronger in nature, used for acne as well as aging. Retinol is the over-the-counter version of Retin-A, which becomes the active Retinoic Acid when it hits the skin. Retinoids are the family that Retin-A, Retinol & Retinoic Acid belong to. It is a chemical compound of Vitamin A.

Fact #10: Retinol cannot be used with acids

Benzoyl peroxide, AHAs & BHAs are known to reduce productivity within retinoids, so do not mix them. These will also compromise the skin, as both acids and retinol can cause irritation.

Preventing Tooth Decay

Four steps to preventing tooth decay

1. Drink only plain water, coffee/tea without sugar (adults only) or plain milk in between meals. Juices/fizzy drinks advertising as ‘low sugar’ or ‘sugar-free’ may still cause decay.

2. When you get hungry, eat only food or drink that does not contain sugar (see below for a suggested snack).

3. Have sugary foods, or drinks (including fresh and diluted juices) only at mealtimes, not between meals.

4. Brush your teeth, with a fluoride toothpaste, morning and night for 2 minutes each time and ‘Spit not rinse’- ensure you do not rinse your mouth with water following tooth brushing so that the fluoride in the toothpaste can protect your teeth against tooth decay.

Suggestions for snacks

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Carrot and cucumber sticks
  • Nuts (not for under 5 years old or those with a nut allergy)
  • Unsweetened crackers
  • Oatmeal biscuit
  • Crispbread
  • Rice cakes
  • Bread rolls
  • Toast
  • Any Cheese
  • Hummus
  • Marmite
  • Natural yoghurt
  • Savoury sandwiches (e.g. tuna and cucumber, egg and cress, cheese and carrot etc…)

Please note that the frequent consumption of fruit between meals can cause decay and erosion due to natural sugars and acids in the fruit.
